What is the Light Music Society

The Light Music Society (LMS) exists to promote and champion light music throughout the world. It is also the backing organisation for the massive Library of Light Orchestral Music. The collection holds over 40,000 sets of orchestral music, much of which is unique to the library.

The society publicises a huge number of light music events throughout the year. Annually, usually over the August bank holiday weekend, we have our own gathering for members. We hold our AGM at this time, often have a celebration dinner, and also organise at least one musical event for members to enjoy.

2017 was our 60th anniversary. We put on a sell-out Celebration orchestral concert with the Light Music Society Festival Orchestra conducted by our then chairman, Gavin Sutherland, and led by Geoffrey Allan. In 2018 we have opted to hold a fully residential Light Orchestral Music Course at Benslow in Hertfordshire. Gavin Sutherland will conduct the course and Geoff Allan will lead the orchestra. This is a wonderful opportunity to be instructed by two renowned exponents of the light music genre. The weekend will culminate in an informal concert to which non-playing members of the society, and friends, are invited. There are still a few places available for string players, and some brass and percussion. For more information contact our Treasurer. The course is now open for non-LMS members.

Members of the LMS receive the society’s quarterly magazine containing news and information about happenings in the light music world.

Magazines contain a variety of articles on all aspects of light music, news of concerts and events, CD news and reviews, radio and TV programmes to look out for, book reviews, news about the library’s acquisitions and activities as well as diversions such as crosswords and quizzes.

As a member of the society you can borrow music from the Library for an administration charge, plus p&p, or buy duplicate sets of parts where we have spares. Please see our Library pages for further information about this.

The magazine, website and social media mean that all members can have free publicity for their events and organisations.
