LYELL CRESSWELL (1944-2022)

New Zealand born, but resident in Scotland from 1972, compositions included string quartets, concertos for violin, cello and accordion and pieces for brass band. Cresswell studied with composers David Farquhar, Douglas Lilburn and pianist Frederick Page in New Zealand.  Orchestral works included Shadows Without Sun, Passagaglia and Voices of Ocean Winds, frequently engaging with visual arts and literary as well as musical concerns. He undertook a Phd in Aberdeen after his move to Scotland, before teaching as Edinburgh University’s Forman Fellow in Composition from 1980-82, then at Glasgow University as Cramb Fellow in Composition from 1982-85.
