American-born operatic soprano Karan Armstrong was particularly noted for the sensuous roles of Lulu (Berg) and Salome (Richard Strauss) although her repertoire ranged widely over the operatic field: Beethoven, Wagner, Puccini, Bizet and more modern composers such as Korngold, Shostakovich, Berio and Janacek, to name but a few. She was called ‘the girl of the golden west’.
