JOAN CARLYLE (1931–2021)

Operatic soprano Joan Hildred Carlyle, born on the Wirral, sang in many opera houses including Covent Garden for about 20 years from 1955. Her Wagnerian roles included Eva in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Freya in The Rhinegold and Sieglinde in The Valkyrie. She also played Titania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She did much for Richard Strauss’s works, including Arabella and, as Sophie, in Der Rosenkavalier. She sang only once at Glyndebourne, in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Her recordings included I Pagliacci (Leoncavallo) and Suor Angelica (Puccini).
