Lancashire-born Wood was a pianist, violinist and composer, educated at Oundle and New College, Oxford. He later taught at Morley College, Glasgow, Liverpool and Leeds Universities and, from 1977 to 1999, Cambridge University. He composed concertos for violin and cello, a symphony, song cycles, five string quartets and other chamber music. His music was heard at the BBC Proms – the tone poem Scenes From Comus (1965) and Variations for Orchestra. His Three Piano Pieces and other works were recorded. Much of his music was lyrical and accessible though some was more ‘difficult’.
