Mansfield-born Beck was a violinist (in the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras) who also composed – pieces for the Halle Wind and Brass Quintet, for the Northern Chamber Orchestra and student orchestras. An earlier work was a Serenade for recorder, cello and harpsichord, his last a Fantasy for two recorders on a popular TV tune. He also wrote at least one string quartet and pieces for clarinet and piano.
