Winters studied recorder with Walter Bergmann, Frans Brüggen and Walter van Hauwe at Amsterdam Conservatorium. Over the course of an extensive performing career, he gave hundreds of recitals, encompassing Renaissance to contemporary styles. Winters also had a distinguished teaching career, holding the posts of Professor of Recorder at the Royal College of Music and Head of Recorder at Birmingham Conservatoire. He taught all ages and abilities, inspiring many recorder players, composing and arranging music for them.
