London-born Jennifer Bate was most notable for recording the complete organ works of Olivier Messaien from the mid-1970s onwards. Educated at Bristol University, both her father and her (first) husband were organists, the latter being George Thalben-Ball. She did not, of course, confine herself to Messaien, but performed Mendelssohn, Elgar and 18 th Century composers like Stanley and Wesley with distinction. She also taught, encouraging young female organists in particular.
