Members of the Light Music Society receive the LMS magazine, published four times each year and sent out quarterly. They are free of charge to Members.
Magazines contain a variety of articles on all aspects of light music, news of concerts and events, CD news and reviews, radio and TV programmes to look out for, book reviews and news about the Library's acquisitions and activities as well as diversions such as musical crosswords and quizzes.
An example issue of the magazine, issue 58 (winter 2012), is available for download using the link below. It is in Adobe PDF format.
Advertising light music events in the Magazine is free of charge to LMS members. For business advertising rates or a sample newsletter please contact the Secretary.
As a member of the Society, you can hire music from the Library of Light-Orchestral Music and buy duplicate sets of parts if they are out of copyright. Please see our Library pages for further information about hiring music.
All LMS members are warmly invited to attend the Society's Annual General Meetings that are held in a different regional location every year. Celebrations of Light Music accompany the AGM each year and these offer LMS members the opportunity to meet other like-minded enthusiasts and get to know the members of the Committee.
In 2001, for example, after the AGM at Lancaster Farm, we held an ad-hoc orchestral get-together, playing through a selection of items from the library. This was followed by a buffet meal and the whole event was enjoyed by playing and non-playing members alike.
For the Society's 50th anniversary in 2007 the AGM was held at Alston Hall near Longridge, Lancashire, and the Light Music Society Celebration Orchestra (conducted by John Wilson) performed a concert of light-orchestral favourites. The Society returned to Alston Hall for the 2008 AGM and an evening concert was conducted by Gavin Sutherland.
While the Society's gatherings are great fun, many members prefer to simply enjoy receiving their quarterly Newsletter and to keep themselves to themselves. There is no obligation to attend the meetings and celebrations at all, members are free to enjoy Light Music in their own way and we very much appreciate everyone's support.
As well as benefitting from the Library of Light-Orchestral Music, Light Orchestras from all over the UK and abroad also benefit from the extra publicity given to their concerts through the LMS magazine and website. We have established a network of orchestras who pool information, and their members can contact each other for help with getting material, advice and even extra players.
